2014: Prosperidad ambiental // Environmental prosperity

[English below] Se acabó el 2013 en Japón.

2013 is gone in Japan. It has been another devastating year for life on Earth, the only planet in the universe about which science has knowledge of the existence of life. Again this year 52,000 Km2 of forests were lost to deforestation, 70,000 Km2 of fertile soil has been lost to erosion, and an additional 120,000 Km2 were lost to desertification. The worst thing about the environmental crisis we live in is that this biocapacity loss significantly reduces the ecosystem’s ability to regenerate and absorb carbon emissions, which this year increased by one billion metric tons with respect to the previous year. In other words, despite everything we know, everything that has been done already to transform the situation, and all the awareness that has been created, the problem, far from stopping and reverting, is aggravating further. The great master of effectiveness, Stephen Covey, said “to know and not do is not to know”. Do we realize that this problem belongs not only to the people giving their lives to solve it, but that it affects each and every one of us, even our unborn generations? This year that starts my only wish is less carbon emissions than last year, greater forest coverage and less deforestation, but above all, greater coherence between humanity’s intelligence and our behavior. Prosperity is fundamentally a matter of attitude. May 2014 be so for all of us!
